We realize that just by participating in this event you're already making a committment to helping our cause and speaking out against sexual violence. You might think that it is silly to ask men to wear high heels and you might wonder why we're asking men to wear them.
We're asking men to wear (preferably red) high heels for this march for a couple of reasons--High heels are just one of the countless uncomfortable items that the media and pop culture tells women that they should wear. Some women like them, some don't, but most women have probably worn them and suffered through the experience. This is a chance for men to put on those same shoes and think critically about the ways that we raise men and women differently.
Equally important to making an impact on you, the participant, is that we be seen and noticed during the march! We want to make an impression on the community and encourage them to think critically about sexual violence and gender issues even more than we want you to!
We want everyone to know about Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault’s free services, which include a 24-hour crisis hotline for victims and survivors of sexual assault and their family and friends, individual counseling, legal and medical advocacy, and a comprehensive sexual assault prevention education program for pre-school through college aged students.
Wearing the high heels is of course optional, however, we highly recommend you wear them at the march! You are encouraged to bring your own- however, there will be an assortment to choose from at the event (make sure you reserve them ahead of time).
If you are interested in purchasing your own- here are some tips: To size the shoes, note that women's sizes are two smaller than mens sizes; so, if you're you're a men's 13, buy a women's 15.
We have been asked where one buys large high heeled shoes; besides your local shoe store (and it's difficult to find the larger sizes at shoe stores), you can go online and order from www.snaz75.com, which carries a wide selection. We will post other resources later.
